The Simpson Stump - February 2022

Happy 2022 Neighbors!

2021 Holiday Wrap Up

A huge thanks to our neighbors, students from Empower College Prep, and the City of Phoenix Block Watch Grant Program for their support of our Holiday Luminaria and Hot Chocolate Social! We had a record number of neighbors stop by to share some hot chocolate, baked goods, and holiday cheer, and had over 30 neighbors involved in placing luminaria along their blocks. We hope to be able to reach every household in Simpson next year, so hopefully we can continue to expand the reach until we can cover all of Simpson once again!

Neighborhood Happenings

  • Neighborhood Garage Sale is back! We’ll be placing signage out along the major streets the night before, with the date of the sales being March 5th. This will be the same day as the M7 Street Fair in Melrose, so there will be a lot of people out and about that day!

  • The morning of April 2nd Neighborhood Services is working to bring together as many community members as they can for a litter pick up centered around 19th Ave and Camelback. This should be a fairly large event with neighborhoods, churches, non-profits, businesses, and city staff. If you’re interested, we would love to have as large a Simpson Neighborhood attendance as we can. The official event will run from 8 am to 11 am, and will start at the 19th Ave and Camelback Park and Ride. Hope we see some of you there (gloves, bags, and trash grabbers will be provided).

  • Missouri Avenue striping improvements are coming! The city has been working with neighbors and the neighborhood on some of our concerns about Missouri Avenue, in particular the stretch around 21st Ave. We won’t get everything we were hoping for, but we will be getting improved striping along the entire stretch through Simpson. We’re still working to figure out what changes are possible, and what neighbor input we will need to make it happen!

  • It was a quiet change last year, but Phoenix AtYourService has been changed to myPHX311 (both the website and phone app are available under that name). This is where you can report graffiti, illegal dumping, shopping carts, abandoned cars, damaged roads, and many other things. Information for utilities, trash services , libraries, and just about anything else city specific can be found through myPHX 311 as well.

2022 Neighborhood Meetings

Our first neighborhood meeting for 2022 will be held on February 15th, at 6:30 pm. We’ll be back to our usual location, with First Indian Baptist Church (2205 W. Georgia Ave) hosting us in February. We have tentative guests confirmed from our Community Action Officers, Neighborhood Services, and our State Legislative Representative for LD 30, Rep. Christian Solorio.

We’re also planning our second meeting and speakers as well, which will be on April 19th at 6:30. Location is to be determined, but we hope to be a new (old) location and will involve a facility tour! We will have Vice Mayor Laura Pastor’s office to give us an update for what’s going on in our corner of Phoenix, and to hear our neighbors’ concerns.

Thanks everyone, and please let us know if you need anything in the meantime.
