Communities Matter. Community Matters.
Fall is here, or almost here! With the cooler weather we are looking forward to seeing more of our neighbors out and around the neighborhood.
Neighborhood Safety Updates
The ASU evaluation of the 19th Avenue Community Safety Plan Organizers shared an update with the community leaders in the area. This study was evaluated and developed by ASU as a part of the fist two years of the CPS, and compared pre-intervention crime levels (documenting back to 2018) and community perceptions over the last 24 months. They also compared levels from the past years to the target goals set as part of the safety plan for 19th Avenue.
We are happy to share the detailed results via email once approved to do so (after presentation to City Council in early September), and we will discuss this in our September meeting as well, but the highlights:
12-14% reduction in violent crimes
14% reduction in trespassing
Nearly 50% reduction in robberies
12-40% reduction in Theft related crimes
Drug crimes decreased, but below goal
Perceptions of safety improved
Perceptions of blight worsened
In the meantime, don’t forget that My Phoenix 311 app can be used to report violations, street issues, and more (such as blight issues). All city programs are complaint based so using the app to make them aware is the best way to get concerns addressed.
Tree Planting
Good news, we’re on the calendar for our fall planting of grant funded trees! These will be planted the week of October 20th, with a small celebration occurring on October 25th. We will be following up with everyone ahead of that date, but expect early in October to see utilities getting marked out and flags distributed.
Special Thank you
It is with a heavy heart we say that Peggy passed away since our last meeting. She loved this community and served for many years as the secretary helping to distribute newsletters, organize successful events, and giving back to our neighborhood. Her great laugh and genuine interest in people will be missed.
